Four of the five executive posts that Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited (UCSL) has advertised at Malpe, Karnataka, are reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates. Three of them are unfilled from earlier rounds (backlog vacancies). Online forms are accepted from 7 October to 28 October 2026 for these regular posts: two Assistant General Managers, one Manager and two Deputy Managers. They are for engineering graduates or diploma holders with 7 to 15 years of shipyard or marine experience. Selection for UCSL executive posts 2026 rests on a work-experience presentation, a group discussion and an interview; the notice lists no written test.

Checked line by line: UCSL’s 13-page Vacancy Notification No. 96 dated 7 October 2026 for executive posts. UCSL is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cochin Shipyard Limited, and the notice is listed on the UCSL, Malpe section of the Cochin Shipyard careers page. On 9 October 2026, that page listed this notice with its two annexures and a last date of 28 October 2026, and no corrigendum.

Only AGM (Design) is unreserved among the UCSL executive posts 2026

Post Grade Category Upper age on 28 October 2026
Assistant General Manager (Contract cell) E5 SC (backlog) 50
Assistant General Manager (Design) E5 Unreserved 50
Manager (Hull) E3 SC (backlog) 40
Deputy Manager (Electrical Design) E2 SC 35
Deputy Manager (Quality control) E2 SC (backlog) 35

E2, E3 and E5 are the grades of these posts; E5, the AGM grade, has the highest pay scale. The Deputy Manager (Electrical Design) post carries a double asterisk in the notice, but the notice gives no note explaining it. The four posts other than AGM (Design) are reserved for SC candidates, and the notice says Government of India directives on reservation apply.

UCSL says it may increase or reduce the posts, or not fill them. Persons with disabilities are not included, because the yard does hazardous work.

Degree, diploma and years of experience for each UCSL post

All experience must be “managerial” and in a shipbuilding, ship repair, offshore fabrication or marine engineering company, or a marine-related government body. The two Deputy Manager posts also accept a petrochemical company.

Post Qualification Experience needed
AGM (Contract cell) Degree in Mechanical, Production, Electrical, Electronics, Civil or Marine Engineering, with at least 60% marks 15 years in sub-contracting, vendor development, purchasing, operations or government tenders
AGM (Design) Degree in Mechanical, Naval Architecture or Production Engineering, with at least 60% marks 15 years in hull structure, machinery outfit or hull outfit design of ships
Manager (Hull) Degree in Mechanical, Naval Architecture or Production Engineering, or a 3-year diploma in Mechanical, Marine or Shipbuilding Engineering 9 years with a degree, 12 years with a diploma, in hull, outfitting, heavy fabrication or erection
DM (Quality control) Degree in Mechanical, Marine or Naval Architecture, or a 3-year diploma in these or Shipbuilding, plus NDT or ASNT Level 2 certification 7 years with a degree, 10 years with a diploma, in quality control of outfitting, machinery, piping or fabrication
DM (Electrical Design) Degree in Electrical, Electronics, Electrical and Electronics, Electrical and Instrumentation, or Electronics and Communication Engineering, or a 3-year diploma in Electrical, Electronics, Naval Architecture or Shipbuilding 7 years with a degree, 10 years with a diploma, in electrical design with AutoCAD, Tribon, Aveva or CADMATIC

NDT means non-destructive testing, and ASNT is the American Society for Nondestructive Testing. A diploma must be from a State Board of Technical Education.

What UCSL will and will not count as managerial experience

  • Training does not count. Executive, management, apprentice or any other training period is not counted as experience.
  • Company type matters. Experience certificates are considered only from companies registered under the Companies Act 1956, or foreign companies of equal status.
  • Your current pay matters. Say you hold a regular post in a public sector undertaking (PSU), government or autonomous body. You then need one year in UCSL’s scale just below the post’s scale, or an equivalent scale. In the private sector or on contract, look at your cost to company (CTC), the total yearly package your employer pays. Its cash part, or your basic pay, must be comparable to UCSL’s scale just below the post.
  • Proof for current jobs. Without an experience certificate, upload your appointment or offer letter, latest pay slip, and a CTC certificate or last year’s Form-16 (the yearly tax certificate from your employer). Private and contract staff must also upload a CTC breakup.
  • Describe your duties. State the nature of work and responsibilities in each job, and upload proof.
  • No draft forms. Incomplete, withdrawn or draft applications are not considered, and junk entries in any field can lead to rejection.

Government and PSU staff upload a declaration (Annexure I) that they have told their employer in writing. Their candidature may not be considered without a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the employer before final selection.

What UCSL pays each month at the bottom of the E2, E3 and E5 scales

The notice gives the pay scales and a table of monthly emoluments “as on date”. These are UCSL’s own figures:

Item AGM (E5) Manager (E3) Deputy Manager (E2)
Pay scale Rs 80,000 to Rs 2,20,000 Rs 60,000 to Rs 1,80,000 Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,60,000
Basic pay Rs 80,000 Rs 60,000 Rs 50,000
DA (dearness allowance, 55.7% in the notice) Rs 44,560 Rs 33,420 Rs 27,850
HRA (house rent allowance, 10% in the notice) Rs 8,000 Rs 6,000 Rs 5,000
Perks and allowances (35%) Rs 28,000 Rs 21,000 Rs 17,500
Total a month Rs 1,60,560 Rs 1,20,420 Rs 1,00,350

The notice’s totals list earnings only; it does not show deductions. Each scale carries a 3% increment (for example, Rs 80,000-3%-Rs 2,20,000). The notice also lists contributory provident fund, accident cover, medical reimbursement, leave encashment and the National Pension System as admissible.

Selected candidates start at the minimum of the scale, and “pay protection will not be considered”. So your current pay will not be protected.

The posting is at the Malpe unit or project sites. The job can also require work on board ships, or at sites anywhere in India or abroad.

Birth-date cut-offs of 1976, 1986 and 1991 for the three UCSL grades

  • Assistant General Manager: up to 50, born on or after 29 October 1976.
  • Manager: up to 40, born on or after 29 October 1986.
  • Deputy Manager: up to 35, born on or after 29 October 1991.

SC candidates get 5 more years in posts reserved for them. Ex-servicemen get 10 more years for Manager and Deputy Manager, and 5 more for Assistant General Manager. After all relaxations, the age cannot go above 45 for Deputy Manager, 50 for Manager and 55 for Assistant General Manager.

70 of UCSL’s 100 selection marks depend on your experience and presentation

The notice lists no written test. UCSL first shortlists applicants from the certificates they upload. Shortlisted candidates give a PowerPoint presentation of up to 10 minutes on their work experience. Those who pass this step go on to a group discussion and a personal interview. The selection may be held at Malpe or online.

Part Marks
Work experience in the relevant area 40
PowerPoint presentation on work experience 30
Group discussion 10
Personal interview 20
Total 100

So 70 of the 100 marks depend on your experience and how you present it. Candidates who attend the personal interview at Malpe can claim single to-and-fro third AC rail fare by the shortest route. They need proof of travel and a copy of their savings bank passbook. No fare is paid to candidates found ineligible at certificate verification, or when selection is held online. A rank list stays valid for up to 18 months from the reporting of the last candidate, or until a fresh notification for the same post.

One application, one fee: the Cochin Shipyard online form for UCSL

  1. Read the user manual and FAQ on the UCSL Malpe career page of cochinshipyard.in or on udupicsl.com.
  2. Do the one-time registration on Cochin Shipyard’s online recruitment portal (an SAP system), then submit the application for your post. Submit only one application; it is final once submitted.
  3. Upload proof of age, qualification, experience and caste, and a recent colour passport photo. SC candidates need a community certificate from a revenue officer not below the rank of Tahsildar.
  4. Pay Rs 1,000 online by debit card, credit card or net banking, plus bank charges. SC and ST candidates pay nothing. The fee is not refunded.
  5. Log in to “My Applications” and check that the status shows “In process”. Save the registration number for later contact.

Do not post printouts or certificates. On the last date, technical support by e-mail or phone may not be available after 4 PM. For questions, UCSL lists career@udupicsl.com and 0820 2538604.

Water board and rocket centre jobs to compare with UCSL Malpe

Experienced engineers can also look at our pages on the TGPSC HMWSSB Manager (Engineering) recruitment and ISRO LPSC Scientist and Engineer posts. For more, see public sector company jobs, Karnataka government jobs, and jobs for graduates and diploma holders.

Our suggestion: UCSL judges your work experience from the documents you upload and a presentation of up to 10 minutes. So build the presentation around two or three projects your certificates can back up. Before paying the Rs 1,000 fee (SC and ST candidates pay nothing), confirm that your current scale or CTC meets the “immediate lower scale” rule. The form must be submitted by 28 October 2026.
