ONGC E1 Recruitment 2026: 52 Engineer and Geologist Posts, No GATE, Apply by 31 July

ONGC has opened 52 executive-grade posts for engineers and geologists at a package it puts at around 26 lakh a year, and this cycle it comes with a twist: no GATE score is needed. Unlike the Maharatna’s usual GATE-based hiring, this drive is decided on ONGC’s own computer-based test. Recruitment of Geologists and Engineers at E1 Level under Advertisement No. 2/2026 is open until 31 July 2026, and the exam is already dated for 6 September.

One label to get right: many job sites call this an ONGC Graduate Trainee recruitment. The official advertisement does not. These are Geologists and Engineers at the E1 executive grade, not trainees, which matters because E1 is a full officer post from day one.
No GATE This Time: ONGC’s Own CBT Decides
This is the headline change, and it widens the field. ONGC has historically hired graduate engineers off their GATE scores, but Advertisement 2/2026 says nothing about GATE anywhere. Instead, the corporation conducts its own computer-based test, tentatively on 6 September 2026, and the selection weighting is CBT 85% plus interview 15%, followed by a medical. So a strong GATE score gives you no advantage here, and equally, not having one is no barrier. Everyone competes on the ONGC exam.

The category split across the 52 is 24 Unreserved, 12 OBC, 9 SC, 2 ST and 5 EWS, with persons-with-disability seats reserved horizontally per the government roster. Mechanical alone accounts for more than half the posts, so mechanical engineers have by far the widest door here.
Who Can Apply, Branch by Branch
- Mechanical, Chemical, Petroleum and Instrumentation: a graduate BE or BTech degree in the respective engineering discipline, with a minimum of 60%. For Petroleum, an Applied Petroleum Engineering degree also qualifies, though only for 7 of the 9 seats. A note the notification is firm on: a BE or BTech in Chemical Sciences and Technology is not accepted for the Chemical Engineering stream.
- Geology: a postgraduate degree in Geology, or an M.Sc or M.Tech in Petroleum Geoscience or Petroleum Geology, or an M.Tech in Geological Technology, each with a minimum of 60%.
- Final-year students are not eligible: you must have completed the qualifying degree by 31 July 2026. Equivalent qualifications such as AMIE are not accepted.
You may apply for only one discipline, and the latest application is treated as final.
The CBT on 6 September: Pattern and Cut-Offs
The computer-based test carries 85 questions over 2 hours, with no negative marking:
- 40 questions on your concerned domain (your engineering branch or geology), 25 on aptitude, 10 on general awareness and 10 on English.
- Qualifying marks in the CBT are 45% for General, EWS and OBC, and 40% for SC, ST and PwBD.
- Candidates are shortlisted for the interview at 5 times the vacancies on CBT score. The interview carries the remaining 15% weight, with its own qualifying minimum of 60% for general and 40% for reserved candidates, and a group discussion may be held but does not count towards merit.
The test runs across 19 cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Nagpur, Bhopal, Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam and Bhubaneswar. Since there is no negative marking, attempting every question is the right strategy.
Pay: An About 26 Lakh CTC at E1
The E1 grade carries a basic pay scale of ₹60,000 to ₹1,80,000, and the advertisement itself describes the package as best-in-industry at approximately ₹26 lakh CTC. On top of basic pay come dearness allowance, a 35% cafeteria allowance component, house rent allowance or company accommodation, performance-related pay, provident fund, gratuity and medical cover for self and dependents, all as per company rules. It is a genuine executive-grade compensation package, which is why an ONGC E1 post draws heavy competition despite the small vacancy count. Note that the notification does not mention any service bond, so do not assume one from what other sites may say.
ONGC E1 Age, Fee and How to Apply
- Age as on 31 July 2026: for the engineering streams, up to 26 for UR and EWS, 29 for OBC and 31 for SC/ST; for Geology, one year higher at 27, 30 and 32 respectively. PwBD candidates get a 10-year relaxation, and ex-servicemen are eligible up to 31 or 32.
- Fee: ₹1,000 for General, OBC and EWS candidates, paid online, while SC, ST and PwBD candidates are exempt. Note that this is a ₹1,000 fee, not the ₹500 some sites list, and there is no women or ex-servicemen exemption.
- How to apply: online only through the IBPS registration portal linked from ongcindia.com, between 17 and 31 July 2026. Keep your Class 10 certificate, degree certificate, all-semester marksheets and a photo ID ready as PDFs, apply for one stream, pay the fee and download your call letter from the site later.
Should You Attempt It?
For a mechanical, chemical, petroleum or instrumentation engineer, or a geology postgraduate, with a genuine 60% and an appetite for an ONGC field career, this is a top-tier target: an executive E1 post at around 26 lakh CTC, decided on ONGC’s own exam rather than GATE, so a missing GATE score is no obstacle. The trade-offs are real: only 52 seats nationally, strict medical standards that rule out colour blindness and night blindness, and postings anywhere in India or abroad. If that fits, the form closes on 31 July and the exam is on 6 September.
