What does a Bank PO actually do?

A Probationary Officer is an entry level officer in a bank. Your day to day work usually includes helping customers and solving their queries, opening and managing accounts, handling cash and clearing, checking loan and KYC documents, and supervising the clerical staff at the branch. You also take care of some public relations and help bring new business to the branch. For the first two years you are on probation, during which the bank trains you across different departments before confirming you as a regular officer.

IBPS PO 2026 Eligibility and Age Limit

There are two simple requirements.

Education. You need a graduation degree in any subject from a recognised university. Any stream is fine, whether it is arts, commerce, science or engineering. You must be a graduate on the day you register, which means your final result should be declared on or before the last date of registration (21 July 2026). If your final year result is not out by then, you cannot apply in this cycle.

Age. You should be between 20 and 30 years old as on 1 July 2026. In other words, you should be born between 2 July 1996 and 1 July 2006. Reserved category candidates get the usual age relaxation: 3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC and ST, and 10 years for persons with disabilities, with further relaxation for ex servicemen. The detailed notification gives the exact category wise cutoff.

Free pre exam training is available at select centres for candidates from SC, ST, Minority and Ex servicemen communities. You can opt for it while filling the form.

IBPS PO 2026 Vacancy Details

The detailed notification is now out, and it gives an indicative total of 6,715 vacancies. Please note that this number is not final. Out of the 11 participating banks, 3 banks, namely Indian Bank, UCO Bank and Union Bank of India, have not yet reported their vacancy count, so the total is likely to go up once they do. Here is the bank wise split as given in the official notification so far.

Bank Vacancies
Bank of Baroda 1,900
Canara Bank 1,500
Bank of Maharashtra 1,100
Indian Overseas Bank 550
Punjab National Bank 504
Bank of India 500
Central Bank of India 500
Punjab and Sind Bank 161
Indian Bank Not yet reported
UCO Bank Not yet reported
Union Bank of India Not yet reported

By category, the notification lists 2,719 for Unreserved, 1,816 for OBC, 1,009 for SC, 669 for EWS and 502 for ST, which add up to the current total of 6,715. We will update this table again if IBPS issues a corrigendum with the numbers for the three remaining banks.

IBPS PO 2026 Application Fee

  • General, OBC and EWS candidates: ₹850
  • SC, ST and PwD candidates: ₹175

The fee is paid online while filling the form.

IBPS PO 2026 Important Dates

  • Notification released: 30 June 2026
  • Online application: 1 July to 21 July 2026
  • Prelims exam: 22 and 23 August 2026
  • Mains exam: 4 October 2026
  • Interview: November or December 2026

The detailed notification itself only confirms the registration window. It says the Prelims will be held in August 2026 and the Mains in October 2026, without giving an exact day, and it reserves the right to change these dates. The 22 and 23 August and 4 October dates shown above come from a separate IBPS tentative exam calendar, so treat them as likely but not guaranteed until your admit card confirms the exact day. The form stays open for only three weeks, so do not wait for the last day. The IBPS server gets very slow near the deadline and many candidates get stuck.

IBPS PO 2026 Salary and In-Hand Pay

The starting basic pay of an IBPS PO is ₹48,480 a month. On top of the basic, you get dearness allowance, house rent allowance, a special allowance and a few smaller allowances. Here is a rough monthly breakdown. These figures are approximate and change with the current DA rate and your posting city.

Component Amount (approx, per month)
Basic pay ₹48,480
Dearness Allowance (DA) ₹10,278
Special Allowance ₹12,847
House Rent Allowance (HRA) ₹4,848
City Compensatory Allowance ₹2,300
Learning Allowance about ₹850
Gross salary (approx) ₹90,733
Deductions (NPS, tax and so on) about ₹14,300
Net in-hand (approx) ₹74,000 to 76,000

The lines above are the main salary heads. The gross also includes a few smaller DA linked sub components, so the listed rows may not add up exactly to the gross, but the gross and net figures shown here are the standard ones for a new IBPS PO. Your HRA changes with your posting city, around 9 percent of basic in metros, 8 percent in big cities and 7 percent elsewhere, so the in-hand can vary a little. Along with the salary you get job security, a clear promotion path and good perks, which is why lakhs of graduates apply every year.

IBPS PO 2026 Exam Pattern

Selection has four stages: Prelims, Mains, a Personality Test and a Common Interview. Now that the detailed notification is out, here is the confirmed pattern.

Stage Section Questions Marks Time
Prelims English Language 30 30 20 min
Quantitative Aptitude 35 30 20 min
Reasoning Ability 35 40 20 min
Mains (Objective) Reasoning 40 60 45 min
General, Economy and Banking Awareness 50 60 35 min
English Language 40 20 35 min
Data Analysis and Interpretation 40 60 45 min
Mains (Descriptive) Essay and Comprehension 2 25 30 min

Prelims is only qualifying, and its marks are not counted in your final merit. Your final merit is based on the Mains and the Common Interview together, in a weight of 80 for Mains and 20 for the interview.

Negative marking: one fourth (0.25) of the marks for a question is cut for every wrong answer in the objective papers, in both Prelims and Mains. There is no penalty for a question you leave blank.

The Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, Data Analysis and Interpretation, and General Awareness sections are bilingual, in English and Hindi. The English Language sections and the descriptive paper are in English only.

IBPS PO 2026 Syllabus

The topics stay broadly the same every year. Here are the main ones for each section.

  • English Language: reading comprehension, cloze test, para jumbles, fill in the blanks, error spotting and sentence correction, vocabulary and one word substitution.
  • Reasoning Ability: puzzles and seating arrangement, syllogism, inequalities, coding and decoding, blood relations, direction and ranking, input output, alphanumeric series and data sufficiency. The Mains also adds computer aptitude.
  • Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation: simplification, number series, quadratic equations, data interpretation, and arithmetic topics such as percentage, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, time and work, time speed and distance, simple and compound interest, averages, mixtures, mensuration and probability.
  • General, Economy and Banking Awareness: current affairs of the last six months, banking and financial awareness, RBI and monetary policy, government schemes, digital banking and static general knowledge.

How to Apply Online for IBPS PO 2026

  1. Go to ibpsonline.ibps.in, the official registration portal, and open the CRP PO/MT-XVI link. The detailed notification PDF itself is hosted on ibps.in.
  2. Register with your basic details to get your registration number and password.
  3. Fill the form with your education and personal details exactly as they appear on your documents.
  4. Upload your photo, signature, left thumb impression and a handwritten declaration in the sizes the form asks for.
  5. Pay the fee online, submit the form and save a printout for your records.

Keep these documents ready before you start: a passport size photo and your signature in the required size and format, your left thumb impression, a handwritten declaration, your graduation marksheet or certificate, a valid photo ID, and a category certificate if you are applying under a reserved category.

IBPS PO 2026 Selection Process

There are four stages. First is the Prelims, which is only qualifying. Those who clear it sit the Mains, which is a tougher objective test along with a descriptive paper. Candidates who clear the Mains attend a Personality Test, and then a Common Interview. Your final merit is based on the Mains and the interview together, in a weight of 80 for Mains and 20 for the interview, and not on the Prelims marks. You need at least 40 percent in the interview if you are General, and 35 percent if you are SC, ST, OBC or PwBD, to be considered.

Career Growth and Promotions

A bank PO has a clear path to grow. You join as a Junior Management officer (Scale 1) and can rise through Middle Management (Scale 2 and 3), Senior Management (Scale 4 and 5) and Top Management (Scale 6 and 7), and in time even to Executive Director and Chairman and Managing Director. Promotions depend on your performance, internal exams and the number of years you serve, and many officers reach branch manager level within a few years. After you move up to Scale 2 or 3, the in-hand can rise to roughly ₹90,000 to ₹1,10,000 or more, though this is indicative and varies by bank and city.

Perks and Benefits

Apart from the salary, an IBPS PO usually gets leased accommodation depending on the posting, medical benefits, a travel allowance with petrol reimbursement, a newspaper allowance and pension benefits under the New Pension Scheme. These perks add a fair bit of value on top of the in-hand salary.

Preparation Tips

  • Practise each section on its own first, then take full length mock tests in real exam conditions.
  • Work on speed and accuracy together, because negative marking punishes wild guessing.
  • Read a newspaper daily and keep short notes on banking and current affairs for the awareness section.
  • Revise basic maths and reasoning shortcuts so you save time in the Prelims.
  • Solve previous year papers to understand the real difficulty level.

IBPS PO vs SBI PO vs IBPS Clerk

If you are deciding which exam to target, here is the quick difference. IBPS PO gives you an officer post in any of 11 public sector banks through one exam. SBI PO is only for the State Bank of India and is usually a little tougher, with a group exercise added in the final stage. IBPS Clerk is a clerical post rather than an officer post, with an easier exam and a lower starting salary but less transfer pressure. Since the syllabus for all three overlaps a lot, many candidates prepare once and apply for all of them.

Should You Apply?

If you are a graduate under 30 who wants a secure and well paid government bank job, IBPS PO is one of the best options available. One form gives you a chance at 11 banks. Just be ready for serious preparation, and remember that as a PO you can be posted anywhere in the country. If a stable officer career with steady growth appeals to you, this exam is worth your time.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Uploading a photo or signature in the wrong size or format. The portal quietly rejects mismatched files.
  • Leaving registration for the last day, when the server is slowest.
  • A name or date of birth that does not match your certificates.
  • Forgetting to save the final submitted form and the fee receipt.
  • Mixing up the bank wise vacancy numbers, or confusing this recruitment with SBI PO, which is a separate exam run only by the State Bank of India, not through IBPS.
  • Confusing the age cut off date, 1 July 2026, with the qualification cut off date, 21 July 2026. They are not the same date.
