An M.Sc. in Chemistry, or a degree in food technology, dairy, agriculture, veterinary science, biochemistry, microbiology, medicine or a few related subjects, is the key to GSSSB Food Safety Officer Recruitment 2026. Advt 465/202627 has 84 Class-3 posts in Gujarat’s food and drug regulator, at a fixed Rs 40,800 a month for the first five years. The online form runs from 27 October 2026 (6 PM) to 10 November 2026 (11:59 PM) on OJAS, Gujarat’s online job application portal. Candidates can be up to 37 years old on 10 November 2026, with more years for some groups.

Read from GSSSB’s own file: posts kept for candidates with disabilities are in a separate notice, Advt 466/202627, so this page covers only Advt 465/202627. Its 19-page detailed instructions (PDF) are dated 27/10/2026 and issued in the name of the board’s Secretary. The degree lists are printed in English and the rest mostly in Gujarati. On 31 October 2026, OJAS listed both Food Safety Officer notices with a last date of 10 November 2026. It showed no corrigendum (correction notice) or date extension for Advt 465/202627.

M.Sc. Chemistry, the 2016 degree list, or 19 more food and farm subjects

The posts are under the Commissioner, Food and Drugs Control Administration, in the Health and Family Welfare Department. Gujarat’s 2016 rules for the post accept either of these:

  • A Master’s degree in Chemistry from a recognised university, or
  • A degree in Food Technology, Dairy Technology, Biotechnology, Oil Technology, Agriculture Science, Veterinary Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology or Medicine.

The notice also takes in a Union Health Ministry notification of 21 September 2023. Under it, a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree in any of the following subjects counts.

Food Technology group (11 subjects):

  • Food Engineering
  • Food Engineering and Technology
  • Food Processing and Preservation
  • Food Processing Technology
  • Food Technology and Management
  • Food Biotechnology
  • Food Plant Operations Management
  • Food Process Engineering and Management
  • Food Processing
  • Food Safety and Quality Management
  • Process and Food Engineering

Agricultural Science group (8 subjects):

  • Agriculture
  • Agriculture Engineering
  • Biotechnology
  • Dairy Technology
  • Fisheries
  • Food Technology
  • Food Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Horticulture

A plain B.Sc. in Chemistry is not on either list, because the Chemistry route needs a Master’s degree. No work experience is asked for. Working knowledge of Gujarati, Hindi or both is required. Proof of basic computer skills can come later, but it must be given before appointment. A computer course certificate, a computer diploma or degree, or Class 10 or 12 with computer as a subject will do.

The financial-interest bar in the Food Safety Officer rules

The rules carry an unusual condition. No person with a financial interest in making, importing or selling any food item can be appointed as a Food Safety Officer. The notice does not define financial interest or say whether a family member’s food business counts. If your family runs one, you can ask GSSSB on 079-23258916 before applying.

Pay of a Food Safety Officer: Rs 40,800 now, Level 5 later

This notice puts new officers on fixed pay at first. A Food Safety Officer draws Rs 40,800 a month for five years. If the work is found satisfactory, regular pay follows in Level 5 of the 7th Pay Commission matrix, which runs from Rs 29,200 to Rs 92,300. A pay level is one column of that matrix, and pay rises within it through yearly increments. The fixed-pay system is subject to the Supreme Court’s final ruling in two Special Leave Petitions (SLP 14124/2012 and 14125/2012). New officers must also finish training and pass a training exam.

Who can apply after 37, and the 45-year ceiling

The base limit is 18 to 37 years on 10 November 2026. General-category women and reserved-category men may be up to 42. Reserved-category women may be up to 45, and so may candidates with disabilities, whose extra years range from 10 to 20. Ex-servicemen add their years of service plus 3 years, if they have served at least 6 months and hold an ID card and discharge book. Serving Gujarat government staff may get relaxation under the 1967 service rules, though the notice gives no figure.

These benefits for SC, ST, SEBC (Socially and Educationally Backward Classes) and EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) candidates apply only to original residents of Gujarat. Someone from a reserved category who chooses a general post loses the age benefit.

40 general posts out of 84, and 8 for ex-servicemen

Group Total Women’s share
Unreserved 40 13
EWS 8 2
SEBC 19 6
SC 7 2
ST 10 3
Total 84 26

The women’s figures add up to 26, though the notice itself prints no total. A women’s post with no eligible woman goes to a man of the same group, and every other post is open to all. The 8 ex-servicemen posts sit inside the 84. A married SEBC woman has to give a non-creamy layer certificate based on her parents’ income. That certificate shows the family is not in the better-off section of SEBC. A certificate based on her husband’s income gets the form cancelled.

Food Safety Officer paper: 90 general and 120 subject questions

Selection rests on one objective paper with no interview. It may be held as a computer-based response test (CBRT) or on a machine-read OMR answer sheet, and is pitched at the level of the required degree. Part A has 90 questions: 30 on reasoning and data interpretation, 30 on maths, and 30 on the Constitution, current affairs, and Gujarati and English comprehension. Part B has 120 questions on the subject and its use. Both parts run together for 3 hours.

  • A wrong answer loses a quarter of that question’s marks.
  • Every candidate needs 40% in Part A and 40% in Part B, counted separately.
  • About twice the number of posts in each group are then called to show original certificates. A select list, and where it applies a waiting list, comes after that.
  • Widows and listed sportspersons get 5% of their marks added.

OTR number and date of birth: the Advt 465 form

  1. Finish One Time Registration (OTR) on ojas.gujarat.gov.in first. The notice says only OTR-registered candidates can fill this form.
  2. Choose GSSSB, then Advt 465/202627, and sign in with your OTR Registration No. and date of birth through “Apply with OTR”.
  3. Enter Class 10, degree and bank account details, and attach the front page of the passbook as JPEG, JPG or PNG. Refunds are paid to this account. Once submitted, the bank details cannot be changed by an offline request.
  4. Add the photo and signature, then confirm the form. Nothing can be edited after confirmation.
  5. Pay online by 13 November 2026, 11:59 PM, using a debit card, net banking, UPI or a wallet. A transaction charge is added.

Women of every group, SEBC, SC, ST, EWS, disabled and ex-servicemen candidates pay Rs 400. Everyone else pays Rs 500. Those who sit the exam get the fee back. A wrong entry can only be fixed by sending a fresh form by 10 November 2026 (11:59 PM) and paying again.

No exam date or Part B syllabus yet for Advt 465

  • The exam date will come later on gsssb.gujarat.gov.in.
  • The notice gives no detailed Part B syllabus.
  • It mentions marks lost for wrong answers but says nothing about questions left blank.
  • The language of the question paper is not stated.
