A government insurance company is hiring 500 Assistants, any graduate can apply, and there is no interview stage in the selection. NICL Assistant Recruitment 2026-27 spreads those posts across 31 states and union territories, with the merit list drawn state by state. One condition decides everything though, and it is not the exam: you must clear a reading, writing and speaking test in the language of the state you pick, or you are out regardless of your marks. Applications close on 7 August 2026.

Read from the official notification (verified 22 July 2026). National Insurance Company Limited, Recruitment of 500 Assistants in Class III cadre, notification dated 17 July 2026. Vacancies, fee, exam pattern and pay below are taken from the official 36-page PDF on nationalinsurance.nic.co.in.

NICL Assistant 2026: Quick Facts

Qualification Graduation in any discipline, completed on or before 1 July 2026
Age (as on 1 July 2026) 21 to 30 years (SC/ST +5, OBC-NCL +3, PwBD +10 to +15)
Fee ₹850 including intimation charges; NIL for SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen
Selection Prelims, then Mains, then a Regional Language Test. No interview

Pay Basic ₹36,290; gross about ₹53,000 a month in a metro
Apply at ibpsreg.ibps.in (IBPS portal)

Two figures worth correcting, because several sites have them wrong. The fee for SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates is nil, not ₹100. And the gross salary the notification itself quotes is about ₹53,000 a month at the initial stage in a metro city, not ₹63,000. Both figures come straight from the official PDF.

The Regional Language Test Is the Real Gate

This is the clause that decides who actually gets the job. Knowledge of reading, writing and speaking the regional language of the state you apply for is an eligibility condition, and NICL runs a Regional Language Test before final selection to verify it. The notification is blunt about the consequence: candidates not found proficient in that test are disqualified. It is qualifying only and carries no marks, so it cannot help your rank, but failing it ends your candidature no matter how well you scored in the Mains.

The important nuance is that this is a language rule, not a domicile rule. You do not have to belong to the state you apply for. The notification expressly allows candidates to apply for a state other than their own, provided they appear for and clear that state’s language test. So a Hindi-speaking candidate may apply in Kerala, but will have to pass a Malayalam reading, writing and speaking test. The language per state is fixed in the official table: Maharashtra is Marathi, West Bengal Bengali, Tamil Nadu Tamil, Kerala Malayalam, Karnataka Kannada, Delhi Hindi, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh English.

Where the 500 Posts Are

You may apply for one state or UT only, and merit lists are drawn state-wise and category-wise, so your competition is confined to the state you choose. The larger allocations are:

State Posts Language
Maharashtra 57 Marathi
Tamil Nadu 49 Tamil
West Bengal 46 Bengali
Rajasthan 36 Hindi
Kerala 35 Malayalam
Gujarat 34 Gujarati
Karnataka 30 Kannada
Uttar Pradesh 24 Hindi
Delhi 20 Hindi

Smaller allocations run down to one or two posts in states like Nagaland, Sikkim, Goa, Mizoram and Puducherry, where a single vacancy can mean a very small applicant pool but also very high cut-offs. By category the 500 break up as 255 Unreserved, 104 OBC, 67 SC, 38 EWS and 36 ST, with 25 posts reserved horizontally for persons with benchmark disabilities and 55 for ex-servicemen. The notification calls all vacancy numbers provisional.

Two Online Exams, and Only the Second One Counts

  • Preliminary exam: 100 questions for 100 marks in 60 minutes, with separate timing for each section: English Language 30 questions in 20 minutes, Reasoning Ability 35 in 20 minutes and Quantitative Aptitude 35 in 20 minutes. This is a screening test only. Its marks do not carry forward, and candidates are shortlisted for the Mains at roughly 15 times the vacancies, state and category wise.
  • Main exam: 200 questions for 200 marks in 120 minutes, again sectionally timed: Reasoning 40 in 30 minutes, English 40 in 30, Numerical Ability 40 in 30, General Awareness 40 in just 15 and Computer Knowledge 40 in 15. That 15-minute window for 40 general awareness questions is the tightest part of the paper. The final merit list is built from Mains marks alone.
  • Negative marking: one fourth of the marks for every wrong answer, in both the Prelims and the Mains. Unattempted questions cost nothing.

There is no interview stage. Final selection is Mains performance plus qualifying the Regional Language Test, with the older candidate placed higher in a tie, and appointment is subject to medical fitness. Free pre-exam training is available for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates who opt in while applying.

Pay, Probation and the Exit Penalty

The pay scale starts at a basic of ₹36,290, and the notification states gross emoluments of approximately ₹53,000 a month at the initial stage in a metro city, along with medical benefits, group mediclaim and leave travel subsidy. Allowances vary with the place of posting, so a small-town posting will pay less than the metro figure.

One condition deserves attention before you accept a posting. Probation is a minimum of six months and can be extended. If you resign during probation, or your services are terminated during it, the notification requires you to repay an amount equal to the entire salary you received plus ₹25,000 towards training cost. That is a real financial commitment, so treat the job as a genuine choice rather than a backup.

Age, Fee and How to Apply for NICL Assistant

  • Qualification: a graduate degree in any discipline, with the certificate in hand as on 1 July 2026. Final-year students awaiting results are not eligible.
  • Age: 21 to 30 years as on 1 July 2026, that is born between 2 July 1996 and 1 July 2005. Relaxations are 5 years for SC/ST, 3 for OBC non-creamy layer, and 10 to 15 for PwBD depending on category, with widows and divorced women eligible up to 35, 38 or 40 by category, and ex-servicemen getting their service period plus 3 years subject to a maximum age of 50. Relaxations cannot be combined; only one applies.
  • Fee: ₹850 including intimation charges for everyone except SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates, who pay nothing.
  • How to apply: online only through the IBPS portal at ibpsreg.ibps.in/nicljul26, between 18 July and 7 August 2026, choosing your one state and your exam centre at the time of applying.

Who Should Target NICL Assistant 2026

If you are a graduate already preparing for bank clerk exams, this is close to a bonus attempt on syllabus you already know: the same reasoning, quantitative aptitude, English and general awareness ground, the same IBPS platform, and no interview to fear. The decisive question is the language, not the syllabus. Pick the state whose language you can genuinely read, write and speak, because the notification is explicit that candidates not found proficient in that test are disqualified, and a strong Mains score cannot rescue a failed language test. With 500 posts and a 7 August deadline, the choice of state is the most important decision you will make on this form.

NICL Assistant 2026: Common Questions

What is the qualification for NICL Assistant 2026?

Graduation in any discipline from a recognised university, with the degree completed on or before 1 July 2026. It is not a 12th-pass post, and final-year students awaiting results are not eligible.

No. The stages are a preliminary online exam, a main online exam and a Regional Language Test. Final merit comes from the Mains alone, and the language test is qualifying only.

Do I need to be a domicile of the state for NICL Assistant 2026?

No. You may apply for any one state or UT, including one you do not belong to, but you must clear that state’s Regional Language Test in reading, writing and speaking, or you are disqualified.
