The India Post Staff Car Driver Tamil Nadu notice offers 24 posts of Staff Car Driver (Ordinary Grade) in the Tamil Nadu Postal Circle. They are filled by direct recruitment. The Mail Motor Service (MMS) office in Chennai issued it on 29 October 2026. Applications go by Speed Post only, and they must reach Chennai on or before 30 November 2026, by 5 PM. You need a Class 10 pass, a valid licence for light and heavy motor vehicles, and at least three years of experience driving them. The general age limit is 18 to 27 years on 30 November 2026.

Papers from the Chennai Mail Motor Service: this page follows the 14-page scanned English notification (PDF) signed by the Senior Manager (Group-A), MMS Chennai, on 29.10.2026. Its cover page carries the number MSE/B9/XVI/2022-2023, and the detailed pages print it as MSE/B9-2/XVI/2022-2023. The same file holds the application form, the caste and EWS certificate formats, the fee challan and the exam syllabus. A Hindi version sits next to it on the India Post vacancies page, and the notice says the English text is final. On 31 October 2026 the India Post website showed no corrigendum (correction notice) or date extension for MSE/B9/XVI/2022-2023. Its vacancies page listed only the English and Hindi notices for these 24 posts.

Chennai, Salem, Coimbatore, Madurai and Tiruchirappalli: the 6 driver units

Most of the jobs are in Chennai. The MMS Chennai unit alone has 15 of the 24 posts. After selection, India Post allots candidates to units on the basis of merit and their own preference.

Region and unit Posts UR SC OBC EWS
Central Region: Tiruchirappalli 1 1 0 0 0
MM Region: MMS, Chennai 15 7 2 5 1
Southern Region: MMS Madurai 1 1 0 0 0
Southern Region: RO, Madurai 1 1 0 0 0
Western Region: Salem West 3 2 0 1 0
Western Region: MMS, Coimbatore 3 1 1 1 0
Total 24 13 3 7 1

UR means unreserved. No post is reserved for ST candidates. One of the Coimbatore posts is an OBC backlog vacancy, which means a post left unfilled from an earlier round. The notice writes it as “02+01”. Two posts in the Chennai unit are kept for ex-servicemen. They are counted inside the 24, so they are not extra posts. A selected ex-serviceman is then adjusted against his or her own category (UR, SC, OBC or EWS). The notice also says the unit-wise numbers may change, and the office may modify or cancel the notification without giving a reason.

LMV and HMV licence plus 3 years of driving for the Tamil Nadu Circle

The notice lists four essential conditions. You need all four:

  1. A valid driving licence for light motor vehicles (LMV, such as cars and jeeps) and heavy motor vehicles (HMV, such as trucks and buses).
  2. Knowledge of motor mechanism. The notice explains this as being able to remove minor defects in a vehicle.
  3. At least three years of experience driving light and heavy motor vehicles.
  4. A pass in Class 10 (10th Standard) from a recognised board or institute.

Three years of service as a Home Guard or Civil Volunteer is listed as a desirable qualification. It is not compulsory.

The experience has to fit inside your licence. The notice says the experience period in your certificate should be within the validity period of your driving licence.

Age limit on 30 November 2026 for UR, OBC, SC and ST applicants

Age is counted on the closing date, 30 November 2026.

  • UR and EWS: 18 to 27 years.
  • OBC (non-creamy layer): 3 more years, so up to 30.
  • SC and ST: 5 more years, so up to 32.
  • Government servants: up to 40 years, as per Central Government orders.
  • Ex-servicemen: up to 3 years for UR, 6 years for OBC and 8 years for SC and ST, after deducting military service from actual age.

The notice does not mention any relaxation for persons with disabilities. An ex-serviceman who does not attach service and trade proof is treated as general category, with no age relaxation.

Rs 19,900 to Rs 63,200, with allowances left unpriced

The post is a Group C, non-gazetted job in the General Central Service. It sits at Level 2 of the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix, with a pay range of Rs 19,900 to Rs 63,200. Pay Level 2 is the step of the central pay table that starts at Rs 19,900 basic pay a month.

The notice adds “admissible allowances” to the basic pay. For central staff these usually include DA, the dearness allowance. It is a percentage of basic pay, revised twice a year. They also include HRA, the house rent allowance, which depends on the city. The notice does not print any allowance figures, so this page does not estimate take-home pay. Probation lasts two years.

Road sense carries 30 of 80 marks in the India Post Staff Car Driver Tamil Nadu test

Selection follows Annexure-I of the notice. There are two stages, and both count for the final merit list.

Stage What it tests Marks Time
Stage I: theory test (multiple choice) General knowledge (20 questions), reasoning (15), simple arithmetic (15), road sense, vehicle maintenance, traffic rules and signals (30) 80 90 minutes
Stage II: practical test Finding and fixing minor defects, changing and inflating wheels, and heavy vehicle driving 20 Two papers of 20 minutes each

Each question in Stage I carries 1 mark. The question paper comes in English, Hindi and the local language where Hindi is not the local language. The notice says nothing about negative marking.

The 30-question road sense part is the largest. It covers sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, licensing and registration of vehicles, offences and penalties, and accident claims. It also covers the toolkit, GPS, and how mechanical vehicles compare with electric ones.

The notice lists minimum marks of 33% for SC and ST, 37% for OBC and EWS, and 40% for others. It adds that a lower standard applies only if posts are reserved for that category. No post here is reserved for ST. Only those who clear Stage I sit Stage II. Only those who clear each Stage II paper reach the merit list, so the heavy vehicle driving paper has to be passed on its own. The final list uses total marks from both stages. The number selected in each category equals the posts for that category. India Post keeps no waiting list. A lower-ranked candidate is called only if a selected person refuses or declines the offer.

Who signs the experience certificate under clause 9(f)(vi)

The notice is strict about the experience certificate. It sets these rules:

  • For work in a Central or State Government office, a Gazetted Officer of that office issues it. For work in a registered firm, company, agency or institution, its head issues it.
  • It must show the full address with house number and pincode, the name and designation of the person who issues it, and the date of issue.
  • It must show light vehicle and heavy vehicle experience separately, each with a “from” and “to” date.
  • Its period must fall within the validity of your driving licence.

The rejection list repeats this point. A certificate from a non-recognised institution, or one without a full address and pincode, can get the form rejected. Send a licence copy (or licence extract) that shows the date of first issue and expiry for both LMV and HMV.

E-Biller ID 1000099022: the post office challan for the driver fee

The fee is Rs 100. Women, SC and ST applicants pay no fee. Ex-servicemen are not on the exempt list. Everyone else pays only by e-payment at any computerised post office in India. The notice says any other mode of payment leads to rejection.

  1. Print the three-part challan from the notice PDF. The e-biller is “Senior Manager, MMS Chennai” with E-Biller ID 1000099022.
  2. Fill in your name, address and the fee details, and pay at the post office counter by 30 November 2026.
  3. The post office keeps one copy and returns the candidate’s copy and the copy meant for MMS Chennai.
  4. Paste the original receipt from the post office on your application form. Send the MMS Chennai copy of the challan with the application, and keep the candidate’s copy.

The fee is not refunded once paid. The challan can be paid up to 30 November 2026, but the receipt has to reach Chennai with your form by 5 PM that day. So paying on the last day leaves no time to post the form.

Posting the MMS Chennai form to No.37 Greams Road

  1. Fill in the application form printed in the notice in Hindi, English or Tamil. Do it without corrections and sign it.
  2. Paste one recent passport-size photo in the box and attach a second one. Self-attest both, because the rejection list names photos without self-attestation.
  3. Attach self-attested copies of your age proof, Class 10 certificate, licence, experience certificate and, if needed, the caste certificate. EWS applicants need an Income and Asset Certificate for 2025-2026 in the format given. Do not send originals.
  4. Write your category on the form. If you leave it blank, you are treated as UR.
  5. Send it by Speed Post only to: The Senior Manager, Mail Motor Service, No.37, Greams Road, Chennai – 600 006.
  6. Post it early. It must reach the office on or before 30 November 2026 by 5 PM. Forms sent any other way, or received late, are rejected.

Unsigned, incomplete or late forms are rejected, and so are forms from candidates who are under or over age. Ex-servicemen without a designated driver trade in the army, or without a proper service certificate, can also be rejected. Only eligible candidates get a Hall Permit (admit card) for the test. The office does not write to those who are found ineligible.

Stage II printed as 10 and 20 marks, and other unclear lines in MSE/B9

  • The Stage II table on the Annexure-I page prints 10 marks for one practical paper and 20 for the other. The stage summary and the syllabus page both give Stage II 20 marks in total.
  • The notice asks for three years of light and heavy vehicle driving. It does not say if three years are needed on each type. The form asks for each type’s dates separately.
  • The exam date and centre are not given.
  • There is no word on negative marking.
  • There is no reservation or age relaxation for persons with disabilities in the notice.
