A heavy-vehicle licence in your wallet does not automatically make you eligible for this recruitment. GSRTC Driver Recruitment 2026 has opened 4,599 posts across Gujarat, but the fine print sets an age requirement on the licence itself, not just on the candidate. Applications close 5 July 2026, 11:59 PM, with two extra days allowed for fee payment.

Verified against the official advertisement (2 July 2026). GSRTC’s Advt No. GSRTC/202627/1 covers Driver-cadre recruitment, with online applications open from 6 June 2026 through OJAS Gujarat. Every figure below comes from the 12-page official Gujarati advertisement, read page by page.

The Licence Clock That Disqualifies Half the Applicants

Male candidates need two things together: a Heavy (public-vehicle) Licence that is already at least four years old, and four years of documented heavy-vehicle driving experience earned after that licence was issued. A man who passed his heavy-licence test two or three years ago does not qualify, however skilled a driver he is. The experience clock has its own quirks too. For bus or travels driving, experience counts only from the date of the PSV badge, not from whenever you first sat behind a heavy wheel. For truck driving, it counts only from the TRANS-endorsement date. And 108 Ambulance driving does not count at all, since an ambulance is not classified a heavy vehicle. Read your own paperwork carefully before assuming you clear the bar.

GSRTC Driver Recruitment 2026: Category-Wise Vacancies

Category Male Female Total
Unreserved 1,385 681 2,066
EWS 329 161 490
SEBC 711 350 1,061
SC 184 90 274
ST 475 233 708
Total 3,084 1,515 4,599

Of these 4,599 posts, 459 are set aside for ex-servicemen as a sub-quota within the totals above, not as extra posts on top. Women make up nearly a third of the total, filled through horizontal reservation inside each category rather than a separate women’s column.

A Different, Easier Path for Women Applicants

The licence rule above is a male-only trap. Women candidates only need to hold the Heavy licence at the time of applying; there is no four-year vintage requirement on it. Heavy-vehicle driving experience is preferred for women, not mandatory. A woman without that experience is not turned away: she instead goes through two months of training at GSRTC’s own Automatic Driving Test Centre, and the corporation begins the appointment process only after she completes it satisfactorily. Many women who could never clear the male eligibility bar, a freshly issued licence with zero commercial driving hours, are fully eligible to apply right now.

Why the Driving Test Decides More Than the Written One

Selection runs in two stages. The written exam is a 100-mark, one-hour OMR test: General Knowledge carries 30 marks, Road Safety and Auto Mechanics 20, Gujarati language 20, English 10, and Arithmetic 20. Every wrong answer costs 0.25 marks, and so does a blank one, unless you actively darken option (E), a dedicated skip bubble most competitive exams don’t have. There’s no fixed passing mark, but anyone who scores zero or below is automatically dropped from the list called for the driving test, so “no minimum” is not the same as “no risk.”

Candidates are then called to a 50-mark driving test at twice the vacancy count, ranked by OMR score within their category. You need at least 35 out of 50 to pass. Here’s the part most listings skip: final merit blends the two stages at 40:60, written to driving. The OMR is worth 100 marks but counts for only 40% of the total. The driving test is worth just 50 marks, yet it counts for 60%. So each mark on the driving test is worth roughly three times a mark on the written paper. If you’re deciding where to spend your remaining prep time, the answer is behind the wheel, not with a GK book.

Five Years Fixed, Then a Regular Posting

This is a contract appointment, not a permanent one from day one. Selected drivers get a fixed Rs 26,000 a month for five years, with no extra allowances beyond what rules specifically permit. GSRTC reviews performance at the two-year mark, and continuation for the remaining three years depends on that review going well. Only after completing all five years satisfactorily does a driver move to a regular appointment, at whatever basic pay is prevailing in the corporation at that time. The advertisement does not name that figure, so treat any specific “salary after five years” claim elsewhere as unverified. Posting location is also not something you get to choose: GSRTC places drivers at any division or depot it needs, with no district-wise breakdown published anywhere in the document.

Filling the OJAS Form Without Losing Marks

  1. Go to ojas.gujarat.gov.in, choose the Driver cadre, and click Apply Now.
  2. Fill in personal, educational, experience and computer-knowledge details. Enter heavy-vehicle experience only from the licence or badge issue date; gaps don’t count.
  3. Save the form to generate an Application Number, then upload your photo (5 cm x 3.6 cm) and signature (2.5 cm x 7.5 cm) as JPGs, each under 10 KB. That size cap is tight; compress your images before you start.
  4. Confirm the application to get a Confirmation Number. This step is mandatory; an unconfirmed form doesn’t count as submitted.
  5. Pay the fee online, Rs 300 plus GST for unreserved candidates and Rs 200 plus GST for all women, SEBC, SC, ST, EWS and ex-servicemen applicants, using your Confirmation Number.
  6. Print and keep your final application.

Driver or Conductor: Which GSRTC Drive Fits You

GSRTC opened this Driver recruitment alongside its Conductor recruitment (4,318 posts) on the same OJAS window, closing the same day. The two are not interchangeable. Conductor doesn’t need a driving licence at all, and a 17 June press note even made the conductor licence field optional at application. Driver is a different game entirely: it demands the heavy-licence-plus-experience combination above for men, and pays a fixed Rs 26,000 against Conductor’s own separate pay structure. If you hold a heavy licence and meet the four-year rule, or you’re a woman willing to train, Driver is worth the extra paperwork; if you don’t, Conductor is the easier door into GSRTC this month.
