BTSC Food Safety Officer Recruitment 2026: 105 Posts in Bihar Health Department
On this page
Bihar’s Health Department needs 105 Food Safety Officers (FSO) for regular posts in the Bihar Food Safety Service. BTSC Food Safety Officer Recruitment 2026 is how they will be picked. The Bihar Technical Service Commission (BTSC) issued it as Advertisement No. 29/2026. The online form runs from 25 September to 24 October 2026, and the BTSC website gives 11:55 PM as the closing time. You need a degree in a food, farm, life science or chemistry subject listed in the notice. A medical degree such as MBBS, BDS or BAMS also counts. The post is in Pay Level 6, a salary band in the state pay table. Selection is through one 100-mark computer-based test, with no interview.
BTSC Food Safety Officer Recruitment 2026: 41 unreserved seats and an unlabelled row
| Category | Posts |
|---|---|
| Unreserved (UR) | 41 |
| Economically Weaker Section (EWS) | 11 |
| Scheduled Caste (SC) | 17 |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 2 |
| Extremely Backward Class (EBC) | 18 |
| Backward Class (BC) | 12 |
| Women of Backward Classes (WBC) | 4 |
| Total | 105 |
The table heading in the notice says the split includes the 35% horizontal reservation for women who are permanent residents of Bihar. Horizontal means these seats sit inside each category, not on top of the 105. Below the main row, the notice prints a second row of figures (UR 14, EWS 4, SC 6, ST 0, EBC 6, BC 4, total 34) without a label. The notice does not say in words what that row is, so check your category’s share in the official PDF.
Within the 105 posts, 5 are for persons with disabilities. That is 2 for blind or low-vision candidates (VH) and 1 for deaf or hard-of-hearing candidates (HH). One is for locomotor disability (OH), which includes cerebral palsy, dwarfism and acid attack victims. The last 1 (MH) is for autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, mental illness or multiple disabilities. Another 2 posts are for grandchildren of Bihar freedom fighters who get a central pension. The Health Department may change the number of posts while selection is going on.
Degrees that make you eligible for BTSC Food Safety Officer
The qualification follows the Food Safety and Standards rules. There are three main routes, and you need only one of them.
- Route 1: a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree from a recognised university in one of ten subjects. These are food technology, dairy technology, biotechnology, oil technology, agricultural science, veterinary science, biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry and medicine.
- Route 2: a bachelor’s, postgraduate or doctorate degree in a subject from one of two lists. The “food technology” list has 11 subjects, such as food engineering, food processing, food biotechnology, food plant operations management and food safety and quality management. The “agricultural science” list has 8 subjects: agriculture, agricultural engineering, biotechnology, dairy technology, fisheries, food technology, food nutrition and dietetics, and horticulture.
- Route 3: a medical degree. The notice names MBBS, BDS, BHMS (homoeopathy), BUMS (Unani), BSMS (Siddha), BAMS (Ayurveda) and the Bachelor of Sowa Rigpa Medicine and Surgery.
A fourth route covers any other course that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) notifies for this post, with the central government’s approval.
All your certificates must be issued on or before 24 October 2026, the last date of the form. If you still have a provisional certificate, the notice accepts it for the degree.
From 37 to 42: BTSC FSO upper age limits by category on 1 August 2026
You must be at least 21 years old on 1 August 2026. The upper limits are:
| Category | Upper age on 1 August 2026 |
|---|---|
| Unreserved men | 37 years |
| Unreserved women | 40 years |
| BC and EBC (men and women) | 40 years |
| SC and ST (men and women) | 42 years |
BTSC takes your date of birth from your matriculation (Class 10) certificate. Three extra relaxations exist, but you can use only one of them:
- Persons with disabilities: 10 more years.
- Regular Bihar government employees with 3 years of continuous service, moving to a service with a higher pay scale: 5 more years.
- Ex-servicemen: 3 years plus the years of defence service, as long as your actual age is not over 57 on the date you apply. You must upload the certificate for this.
What candidates from outside Bihar should know about Advt 29/2026
Candidates from other states can apply. But reservation is only for permanent residents of Bihar. If you live outside Bihar, you get no reservation benefit, even if you are SC, ST or Other Backward Class (OBC) in your own state. The 35% reservation for women, the 5 disability seats and the 2 freedom fighter seats also go only to Bihar residents. BTSC treats the permanent address you enter in the online form as your permanent residence.
The pass mark is different too. Candidates from outside Bihar, including women and disabled candidates, must score at least 40%, the same as the unreserved category.
Bihar candidates need the right certificates. BC and EBC candidates must upload a non-creamy layer certificate made for Bihar government purposes. This certificate shows the family is outside the better-off “creamy layer”, and a caste certificate alone is not enough. Women from SC, ST, BC and EBC need a certificate issued in their father’s name and address. An EWS income and asset certificate is valid for one year from its date of issue.
The 100-mark BTSC Food Safety Officer CBT and its pass marks
A CBT is a computer-based test, answered on a computer. This one decides the merit list on its own. There is no interview.
- 100 multiple-choice questions, 1 mark each, in 2 hours.
- Questions come in both Hindi and English.
- Each wrong answer costs 0.25 marks.
- The test will be held in more than one shift. BTSC will adjust (normalise) the scores so that an easier or harder shift does not help or hurt anyone.
- The syllabus is set by the Health Department. BTSC says it will publish it separately on its website.
You must reach a minimum score to be considered at all:
| Category | Minimum score |
|---|---|
| Unreserved, and all candidates from outside Bihar | 40% |
| Backward Class | 36.5% |
| Extremely Backward Class | 34% |
| SC, ST, women and persons with disabilities | 32% |
After the result, BTSC holds document verification (DV), where your original certificates are checked. Bring printouts of the documents you uploaded, downloaded from the BTSC website. If you miss the DV date, you do not get a second chance.
Training before you join as a Food Safety Officer in Bihar
Selection does not lead straight to the job. Candidates recommended by BTSC are appointed only after training. The training follows FSSAI guidelines, and the Bihar government runs it with FSSAI’s help. The notice does not say how long the training lasts.
The post sits in Pay Level 6 of the revised pay structure. In the old structure, this was Pay Band-2 with a Grade Pay of Rs 4,200. The notice gives only the pay level, not a rupee figure, and it does not list allowances.
Rs 100 fee, a glasses-free photo and the no-edit rule on the BTSC form
- Apply only online on btsc.bihar.gov.in. Printed, typed or handwritten forms are rejected.
- Pay the Rs 100 fee online by card, net banking or UPI. The notice prints this one fee and lists no category concession. Your bank may add its own charge.
- Enter your Aadhaar number as photo ID. If you do not have Aadhaar, you can give another photo ID such as a PAN card or driving licence. Carry the same ID to the exam.
- Upload a photo taken in the last 3 months. It needs a white background, a full view of your face with eyes open, and no shadow. Remove your glasses for the photo. Keep at least 5 more copies of the same photo.
- Upload clear scans of every certificate: matriculation, degree marksheets and certificate, caste or EWS, residence, disability and ex-serviceman proof, as they apply to you. At DV, BTSC checks only the documents you uploaded.
- Tick every claim in the form, such as reservation, disability or freedom fighter’s grandchild. A claim you do not tick will not be given later.
The BTSC page for Advt 29/2026 gives 11:55 PM on 24 October 2026 as the last time for both the fee payment and the form. It also lists a helpdesk, open 10 AM to 6 PM, on toll-free number 1800 345 6221.
Check everything before you submit. BTSC says it will not accept any request to change or correct the form after submission. You also cannot change your reservation category after registration. Use your own mobile number and email, as BTSC sends all updates on its website and does not promise SMS or email.
