If you have passed 12th and hold a CPCT certificate with Hindi typing, you can apply for MP Police ASI 2026. There are 655 office posts: 520 Assistant Sub-Inspector (Ministerial) and 135 Subedar (Ministerial) Stenographer. Steno applicants also need Hindi shorthand at 100 words a minute. The MP Employees Selection Board (ESB) runs the test for MP Police. The online form runs from 24 September to 8 October 2026 (until 12 midnight), and the written test starts on 3 November 2026.

The notice behind this page: the ESB rulebook for the Subedar Stenographer and ASI (Ministerial) Recruitment Test 2026, a 42-page Hindi document with the file date 17 September 2026. You can find it on esb.mp.gov.in. The pay section also draws on an MP High Court order of 8 September 2026. On 3 October 2026 the ESB website showed no corrigendum or date extension for the Subedar Steno and ASI Recruitment Test 2026.

520 ASI and 135 Subedar Steno posts across six units

Police Headquarters asked for these posts in its letter of 30 July 2026. Each post code is a separate unit, and you rank them in the form. Police Headquarters then gives out units by merit and preference.

Post code Post and unit Posts
01 Subedar (Ministerial) Stenographer, General Branch 125
02 Subedar (Ministerial) Stenographer, Special Branch 10
03 ASI (Ministerial), General Branch 100
04 ASI (Ministerial), Field Units (Maidani Ikai) 370
05 ASI (Ministerial), Special Branch 25
06 ASI (Ministerial), Crime Investigation Department (CID) 25
Total 655

Across the two Subedar codes, the split is UR (unreserved) 35, SC 22, ST 28, OBC 20 and EWS 12. Across the four ASI codes, it is UR 144, SC 82, ST 106, OBC 71 and EWS 50. Another 18 Subedar and 67 ASI posts sit in a “13%” column. Their final category is not fixed yet, so the rulebook lists them under both UR and OBC. Count them once.

Women get 35% of the posts in each category and ex-servicemen 10%. For women, that comes to 231 posts (48 Subedar and 183 ASI). Unfilled women’s or ex-servicemen’s posts pass to other candidates of the same category. Persons with disabilities have no quota here, since a 1995 order exempts the police department from that rule. The number of posts may still go up or down.

CPCT Hindi typing and the computer course lists

Both posts ask for 12th pass plus a CPCT certificate with Hindi typing. CPCT is the Computer Proficiency Certification Test of MP’s Science and Technology Department. A CPCT with English typing alone does not meet the rule.

Each post also asks for one computer course, and the two lists differ.

Subedar (Ministerial) Stenographer needs Hindi shorthand at 100 words a minute, passed from an MP-recognised board, polytechnic, ITI or equal institute. It also needs one of these:

  • a diploma-level exam conducted by DOEACC;
  • the one-year COPA course (computer operator trade) from a government-recognised ITI;
  • a modern office management course from a recognised polytechnic, college, university or ITI;
  • a computer diploma from a university recognised by the UGC.

ASI (Ministerial) needs no shorthand. Any of the four options above works, and so does an engineering degree, MCA, BCA, M.Sc. (Computer Science or IT), or an AICTE-approved polytechnic diploma.

By our reading of page 9, a BCA or MCA is in the ASI list but not in the Subedar list. If BCA is your only computer course and you want the steno post, read that page before you apply.

You must hold the qualifications on the day you fill the form, and every certificate by 8 October 2026. A CPCT score or shorthand result that arrives later will not count.

Upper age 33 or 38 on 8 October 2026, and who gets no relaxation

The rulebook prints only upper limits, counted on 8 October 2026. It does not print a minimum age.

Who Upper age
MP men in UR and EWS 33
Candidates from other states, men and women 33
MP women, all categories 38
MP men in SC, ST and OBC 38
MP men working for the state government, a state corporation, board or autonomous body, and Home Guards 38

MP men in an inter-caste marriage honoured under the state scheme, and UR men who won the Vikram Award, can go up to 38. The limit reaches 43 only for a few MP groups. These are women who won the Vikram Award, reserved-category men who won it, and women honoured under the state’s inter-caste marriage scheme. Page 11 of the rulebook has the full table. MP ex-servicemen can take their years in the forces off their age. After that, they must be no more than 3 years over the limit.

Contract teachers and other local-body staff, such as panchayat or municipal workers, get no age relaxation. Neither do serving or former employees of the central government or other states.

Not from MP? Only open UR posts, at UR age and fee

People from other states can apply, but they compete only for unreserved open posts. Their upper age stays at 33 and they pay the UR fee, whatever their caste or gender. Any reserved claim needs an MP caste certificate in the state format, and that format includes MP domicile. Our MP Police Constable 2026 page explains the same rule for constables.

Rs 720 or Rs 370, and the 13 October correction window

Fee UR and all out-of-state candidates MP SC, ST, OBC and EWS
ESB exam fee Rs 500 Rs 250
Police department exam fee Rs 200 Rs 100
MPOnline portal fee Rs 20 (own login) or Rs 60 (kiosk) Rs 20 or Rs 60
Total with your own login Rs 720 Rs 370

You can correct the form until 13 October 2026. Every correction costs Rs 20 plus a Rs 40 portal fee. The rulebook is not clear on late payment. Para 2.22 (ix) lets an unpaid form be paid in the correction window, but para 2.22 (ii) limits corrections to paid forms. Paying by 8 October avoids the problem. A switch from UR to a reserved category does not bring back the extra fee. Your mobile number, email ID and form number are locked once you submit.

Written test from 3 November: 100 questions, no minus marks

Stage one is a computer-based test (CBT), which you take on a computer at an exam centre. You get 2 hours for 100 multiple-choice questions of 1 mark each. Wrong and blank answers lose nothing, so attempt every question. Both posts sit the same paper:

  • General knowledge and reasoning: 40 marks
  • Intellectual ability and mental aptitude: 30 marks
  • Science and simple arithmetic: 30 marks

There are two shifts, from 10 AM to 12 noon and from 3 PM to 5 PM. Page 13 says the questions will be in Hindi, while page 32 says Hindi or English, so check your admit card. Marks from different shifts are scaled and turned into percentiles. You list four exam cities in order of choice, from the 13 cities named on page 32.

Eight priority groups get 5% of their written marks added. Among them are NCC ‘C’ certificate holders, ex-servicemen (other ranks), and government staff paid from work-charged or contingency funds. Up to 2 dependants of each soldier killed in the recent India-Pakistan conflict are also included. Page 7 has the list. Upload your proof with the form.

The ESB practical test: typing and shorthand marks count in your merit

ESB calls seven candidates per post in each category to stage two, plus everyone tied at the cut-off percentile. Police Headquarters runs this stage. It checks documents (at Bhopal, says page 18) and holds a practical test.

The practical test carries 100 marks and has a pass mark of 30. It also counts towards selection: your final merit is your written marks plus your practical marks. Between two candidates with the same percentile, the older one is placed higher.

  • Subedar Stenographer: two Hindi dictations at 100 words a minute, 5 minutes each. After each one, you get 5 minutes to read and fix your notes and 20 minutes to type them on a computer. Each dictation is worth 10 marks for shorthand and 40 for the typed copy.
  • ASI: two Hindi passages of 600 words each. You get 30 minutes to type each one, for 50 marks each.

Only what you type is marked, and pen corrections are ignored. A missed, extra or changed word, or a word that is not in the passage (such as पाशाला for पाठशाला), is a full error. A spacing slip or a spelling slip, such as मैं for में, is half an error.

The rulebook lists no running or jumping test for these posts. The only body standard is height: 162 cm for men and 152 cm for women, with no chest measurement and no relaxation. A district medical board then checks eyesight without glasses (6/9 and 6/12), colour vision, knock-knees and flat feet.

Subedar and ASI pay scales, and why first-year pay is unsettled

The rulebook gives these pay scales:

  • Subedar (Ministerial) Stenographer: Rs 36,200 to Rs 1,14,800
  • ASI (Ministerial): Rs 19,500 to Rs 62,000

Pages 8 and 20 add a stipend rule for the first three years. A stipend here means reduced pay: 70%, 80% and 90% of the minimum of the scale. The rulebook bases this on a General Administration Department circular of 12 December 2019. In rupees:

Year Subedar Stenographer ASI
Year 1 (70%) Rs 25,340 Rs 13,650
Year 2 (80%) Rs 28,960 Rs 15,600
Year 3 (90%) Rs 32,580 Rs 17,550

Nine days before the rulebook’s file date, the MP High Court at Jabalpur ruled on this system in Writ Petition 14411 of 2020 (order of 8 September 2026). It struck down the cabinet decision of 25 November 2019 behind the 70/80/90% rule. It also struck down the rules and circulars based on it, including the circular of 12 December 2019. It ordered full salary during probation for employees of the departments concerned who joined after 25 November 2019. Some of the petitions came from school education and tribal welfare teachers, and others challenged the general service rules. The order does not name the police department.

So we cannot say yet whether this batch will start on the stipend or on full pay, and we have not estimated take-home pay. Allowances approved by the government are paid on top of pay, and the contributory pension scheme applies to staff appointed from 1 January 2005.

Six form mistakes that get ESB Subedar and ASI forms rejected

The form is filled on the MPOnline ESB portal.

  1. Skipping a post in your preferences. One form covers both posts. ESB will not consider you for any post code you leave out, even with a high percentile.
  2. An undated photo. It must be a colour photo on a white background, no more than 3 months old when you fill the form. Your name and the date it was taken must be printed on it, and both ears must be visible. Reading glasses stay on if you use them; dark glasses are not allowed. Keep five copies.
  3. The wrong kind of signature. Sign in full below the photo. Short signatures, signatures in English capital letters and more than one signature are rejected.
  4. No handwritten declaration. Copy the Hindi declaration in para 2.14 (vi), page 28, in your own handwriting and upload the scan. In it, you state that your details are true, and accept that your candidature can be cancelled if any detail is false or you do not meet the eligibility rules. The form is not accepted without it.
  5. A missing date-of-birth proof. Upload your 8th, 10th or 12th marksheet, plus caste, EWS and bonus-mark certificates for any claim you make.
  6. No Aadhaar number. The form asks for it, and the exam uses Aadhaar-based biometric checks. Our tip: make sure your Aadhaar biometrics are not locked before exam day.

Also bring an original photo ID to the exam. On ID, page 1 accepts e-Aadhaar once UIDAI verifies it, but page 23 says e-Aadhaar is not valid. A physical Aadhaar card avoids that conflict. For help, call MPOnline on 0755-6720200 or the ESB toll-free line 1800 233 7899.

Home district, five-year unit rule and probation for ministerial staff

  • No posting in your home district, except at Police Headquarters.
  • At least 5 years in your first unit before you can move to another unit.
  • You may be sent to other police branches or other state departments, in or outside MP, such as the Economic Offences Wing or the Lokayukta police. Your consent is not needed.
  • You are appointed only to the post you are selected for, and promotion stays in that cadre.
  • Three years of probation and compulsory training, with one more chance if you fail the training.
  • More than two living children, with one born on or after 26 January 2001, bars appointment. A later multiple birth after one child is the exception.
  • Government employees need their employer’s permission before the exam. If selected, they show an accepted resignation, and MP Police staff a relieving order.
  • MP candidates in SC, ST and OBC get actual travel fare for the exam stages, paid after the second-stage caste check. Bring the first page of your bank passbook.
