IBPS SO Recruitment 2026: 745 Specialist Officer Posts in 11 Banks, Apply by 21 July
On this page
Public sector banking has a specialist door, and this is it. IBPS SO Recruitment 2026 opens 745 Specialist Officer posts across eleven banks for engineers, agriculture graduates, lawyers, HR specialists and Hindi post-graduates. Unlike the generalist PO exam, everything here turns on your professional subject. Registration is open until 21 July 2026.
SO Is Not PO: Read This First
People conflate these two every year, so let’s be exact. IBPS PO recruits generalist Probationary Officers, and any graduate can apply. IBPS SO recruits six specialist cadres, each demanding a specific professional degree, and the entire game is a Professional Knowledge paper in your subject. Both are Scale-I officer entries into the same eleven banks, both run Prelims then Mains then interview, but the syllabus and who’s eligible are completely different. If you have a general degree and want banking, PO is your route; if you have a specialist qualification, SO is where it pays off.
IBPS SO Recruitment 2026: The Six Cadres
| Cadre | Posts | Core Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| IT Officer | 301 | 4-year Engg in CS/IT/Electronics, or relevant PG |
| Agricultural Field Officer | 190 | 4-year degree in Agriculture or an allied science |
| Law Officer | 105 | LLB plus enrolment as an advocate |
| Rajbhasha Adhikari | 89 | PG in Hindi with English at degree level |
| HR/Personnel Officer | 60 | Graduate plus 2-year full-time PG in HR/Personnel |
| Marketing Officer | 0 | Graduate plus 2-year full-time MBA/MMS (Marketing) |
Yes, Marketing Officer shows zero vacancies this cycle. The post and its exam pattern are still printed in the notification, but every reporting bank indented nil. Since you get only one application across all cadres, spending it on Marketing would waste your cycle unless the live vacancy table changes, so check it before you choose.
Big Numbers Can Mislead You
IT Officer has the most seats at 301, but it also draws the largest applicant pool in the country, since every computer-science and electronics engineer is eligible. Judge your odds by seats per eligible candidate, not by raw seats. Agricultural Field Officer (190) and Rajbhasha Adhikari (89) look smaller, but they’re gated to narrow degree pools that far fewer people hold. An eligible agriculture graduate or a Hindi post-graduate often faces materially softer competition than an IT aspirant chasing a bigger-looking number. The vacancies themselves are indicative for 2027-28, and three banks (Indian Bank, UCO, Union Bank) reported none yet, so the 745 total can move.
The Law Officer Gate Fresh Graduates Miss
Law Officer needs more than an LLB. The notification requires you to also be enrolled as an advocate with a Bar Council. A final-year or freshly graduated law student who has the degree but hasn’t enrolled yet is not eligible. It’s a quiet disqualifier that knocks out many young applicants who assume the degree alone is enough, so confirm your enrolment status before you apply.
Professional Knowledge Decides Everything
Here’s the mechanic that should shape your whole preparation. All six cadres sit a Preliminary exam, and this cycle every Prelims also carries a Professional Knowledge section, which is a change from older patterns where PK appeared only in Mains. In the Main exam, English, Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude or General Awareness, and the descriptive paper are all merely qualifying. Only your Professional Knowledge score builds the merit list. Final selection weights the Main exam and interview at 80:20. So the general banking-prep material only gets you past qualifying gates; deep command of your own cadre subject is what actually gets you selected. Both objective exams carry 0.25 negative marking.
