Who can apply for CSIR ASO 2026?
This is the most important and most misunderstood part. To be eligible you must meet all of these:
- You appeared in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2024.
- You were not recommended for selection, and your name appears on the UPSC Pratibha Setu Portal.
- You hold a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university, with the result declared on or before the last date.
- You are not more than 33 years old as on 13 July 2026.
- You are a citizen of India.
If you did not appear in CSE 2024, you cannot apply in this recruitment, no matter what some other websites suggest. Age relaxation is given to reserved categories: 5 years for SC and ST, 3 years for OBC-NCL, 10 to 15 years for persons with benchmark disabilities, the usual relaxation for ex servicemen, and 5 years for CSIR departmental candidates.
CSIR ASO 2026 Vacancy Details
The 100 posts are spread across three cadres. You give your cadre preference in the form, and the final cadre is allotted on merit.
| Cadre | UR | SC | ST | OBC-NCL | EWS | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ASO (General) | 23 | 09 | 04 | 17 | 08 | 61 |

| ASO (Stores & Purchase) | 08 | 02 | 02 | 06 | 03 | 21 |

Out of these, 7 posts (including 2 backlog posts) are reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disability. Some Finance and Accounts posts include backlog vacancies. The number of posts is provisional, as stated in the official advertisement, and may change at the time of selection.

CSIR ASO 2026 Salary and Pay
The post is in Pay Level 7 (Cell 1) of the 7th Pay Commission, with a starting basic pay of ₹44,900. The full pay scale runs from ₹44,900 to ₹1,42,400. On top of the basic you get dearness allowance, house rent allowance, transport allowance and other central government benefits.
The official notification does not publish an in-hand figure. As a rough guide, after the usual allowances and deductions like NPS, the starting take-home works out to roughly the amounts below. These are only estimates. They assume a dearness allowance of about 55 to 60 percent and the metro rate of house rent allowance, both of which change over time, and income tax is charged separately.
| Approximate monthly figure | Big metro city | Smaller city |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pay | ₹44,900 | ₹44,900 |
| Allowances (DA, HRA and TA together) | about ₹46,000 | about ₹34,000 |
| Take-home, before tax (approx) | ₹80,000 to 82,000 | ₹68,000 to 70,000 |
If CSIR gives you official accommodation, the house rent allowance is not paid. Other benefits include medical reimbursement, Leave Travel Concession, House Building Advance, and pension under the National Pension System for new entrants. There is a probation period of 2 years from the date of joining, and an ASO can be posted anywhere in India across CSIR’s network of national laboratories.
CSIR ASO 2026 Selection Process
This is where CSIR ASO 2026 is very different from a normal exam. There is no written test with reasoning, maths or general awareness papers. Selection has three steps.
- Step 1, shortlisting: CSIR shortlists candidates for the Computer Proficiency Test on the basis of their total marks (Mains plus Personality Test) in UPSC CSE 2024. The shortlist is in a ratio of about 1 to 5, that is five times the number of posts in each category.
- Step 2, Computer Proficiency Test (CPT): a 100 mark practical test of 1 hour. It is qualifying only, which means its marks do not add to your final rank. You only need to clear the minimum marks.
- Step 3, final merit and document verification: the final merit list is made only on your UPSC CSE 2024 marks (Mains plus Personality Test), provided you clear the CPT. This is followed by checking your original documents.
If two candidates have the same total marks, the tie is broken in this order: higher marks in the CSE 2024 Mains, then older date of birth, then earlier completion of the degree, then alphabetical order of the name.
What is in the Computer Proficiency Test?
The CPT checks basic computer skills. You are asked to do practical tasks in three areas:
- Word processing, such as typing a given passage.
- Spreadsheet work in a program like Excel.
- Making slides in a program like PowerPoint.
You only have to reach the minimum qualifying marks. These are out of 100:
| Category | Qualifying marks |
|---|---|
| Unreserved (UR) | 40 |
| EWS | 37 |
| OBC | 37 |
| SC | 35 |
| ST | 35 |
| Persons with Benchmark Disability | 30 |
Remember, these are pass marks for the CPT, not a selection cut-off. Your final selection still depends on your CSE 2024 marks.
How to Apply Online for CSIR ASO 2026

Keep these documents ready before you start: a scanned photo and signature, proof of date of birth, your 10th and later certificates, both your UPSC CSE 2024 mark sheets, and a category certificate if you belong to a reserved category. Check every detail carefully, because the form cannot be edited after submission.
If you are already working in a government department, you must produce a No Objection Certificate from your employer at the document verification stage. No undertaking or resignation letter is accepted in its place, so inform your department when you apply.
For any problem, CSIR’s recruitment help desk email is ra.helpdesk@csir.res.in. In case of any dispute, the English version of the official advertisement is final.
A common confusion you should avoid
Some websites show CSIR ASO 2026 as a normal written exam with reasoning, English, general awareness and maths papers, and even mention negative marking like 0.33 marks per wrong answer. That information is from an older CSIR exam route and does not apply to this 2026 recruitment. In this recruitment there is no written exam and no negative marking. The only test is the qualifying Computer Proficiency Test, and the merit is based on your UPSC CSE 2024 marks.
Should You Apply?
If you appeared in UPSC CSE 2024, were not recommended, and your name is on the Pratibha Setu Portal, this is a very good chance at a stable central government officer job with a strong Level 7 salary, without sitting another written exam. Since the merit is based on marks you have already scored, it is worth applying if you meet the eligibility. If you did not appear in CSE 2024, this particular recruitment is not for you, and you should look for other open recruitments instead.
