Karnataka has opened one of its largest teacher recruitments of the year: 1,087 teacher posts in the state’s residential schools, decided by a single written exam with no interview. The catch that trips up applicants is which posts need a TET certificate and which do not, plus the fact that 320 of the seats are ring-fenced for the Kalyana-Karnataka region. Applications, run by KEA, are open until 13 August 2026.

Read from the official notifications (verified 23 July 2026). KREIS (Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society) teacher recruitment via the Karnataka Examinations Authority, two notifications both dated 10 July 2026: RPC No. ED/KEA/02/2026 (767 posts) and Kalyana-Karnataka No. ED/KEA/05/2026 (320 posts). Vacancies, eligibility, fee and exam pattern below are from the official PDFs on the KEA portal at cetonline.karnataka.gov.in/kea.

Two Cadres: What RPC and Kalyana-Karnataka Mean

This is really two recruitments issued together, and the difference decides where you can apply:

  • RPC (Residual Parent Cadre), 767 posts: the general Karnataka cadre, open to eligible candidates across the state.
  • Kalyana-Karnataka (KK), 320 posts: a local cadre under Article 371-J, reserved for people of the Kalyana-Karnataka region (Kalaburagi, Bidar, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal, Ballari and Vijayanagara districts). To apply here you must hold a 371-J eligibility certificate issued by the Assistant Commissioner of your sub-division, and the original is checked at verification.

So if you are not from the Kalyana-Karnataka region and do not have the 371-J certificate, your field is the 767 RPC posts. If you are, you can weigh both, since the local cadre usually has a smaller applicant pool.

The Subject-Wise Split, and Where the Seats Are

Subject RPC Kalyana-Karnataka
Social Science 154 24
English 108 69
Science 106 32
Kannada 103 62
Mathematics 103 35
Physical Education 81 33
Computer 57 0
Hindi 55 31
Drawing (Graduate and Diploma) 0 34

Two structural points worth noting: Computer teacher posts exist only in the RPC cadre (57), and Drawing teacher posts, in two grades, exist only in Kalyana-Karnataka (34 together). There is no Music post. The exact category-wise reservation for each subject is published by KREIS in a separate annexure, not in the main notification, so check that before assuming your category count.

The TET Rule Most Applicants Get Wrong

A Teacher Eligibility Test pass is not needed for every post here, and knowing the distinction saves wasted applications:

  • TET is mandatory for the six academic subjects: Kannada, English, Hindi, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. You must have passed either the Karnataka TET (KARTET) Paper-2 or the Central TET (CTET).
  • TET is not required for Computer teacher, Physical Education teacher or Drawing teacher posts.

Beyond that, each subject needs a specific combination of a graduate degree with that subject and a B.Ed in the relevant method, and the Social Science posts additionally require that you studied your degree in English medium. Physical Education needs a B.P.Ed rather than a B.Ed. And across every post, Kannada language proficiency is required, evidenced by having studied Kannada in your schooling or holding a Kannada certificate.

One Written Exam Decides It, With No Interview

Selection is a single competitive written exam followed by document verification. There is no interview, so your rank is your exam score:

  • Paper 1, General Knowledge: 100 questions, 100 marks, 2 hours, covering current affairs, general science, history, geography, the Constitution, Karnataka-specific topics and mental ability.
  • Paper 2, Subject: 100 questions, 100 marks, 2 hours, on your chosen teaching subject.
  • Negative marking of 0.25 per wrong answer, and the same 0.25 is deducted for any question left un-shaded on the OMR sheet, so leaving a bubble blank costs you exactly as much as a wrong answer.
  • You must score at least 35% in the exam to be eligible for selection.

Separately, candidates who did not study Kannada in school must clear a Kannada Language Test of 150 marks, needing 50 to pass. It is purely qualifying and its marks do not count towards your rank. Those who studied Kannada as a first or second language, or in Kannada medium, are exempt.

Pay, Probation and How to Apply

The teaching posts carry a Karnataka pay scale of ₹54,175 to ₹99,400, with the two Drawing teacher grades on ₹49,050 to ₹92,500. Probation is two years, and pension is under the National Pension System. The fee is ₹750 for GM and the 2A to 3B categories, ₹500 for SC, ST, Category-1, ex-servicemen and third-gender candidates, and ₹250 for PwD candidates, with an extra ₹100 for each additional post you apply for.

  1. Apply online through the KEA portal at cetonline.karnataka.gov.in/kea, choosing the RPC or Kalyana-Karnataka notification as applicable.
  2. Select your subject and enter your degree, B.Ed, TET and Kannada qualification details.
  3. Pay the fee by 14 August 2026, and keep your application printout.
  4. Submit before 13 August 2026.

This adds to our Karnataka coverage alongside the KSP Armed Police recruitment and the wider teaching jobs we track.

Is KREIS Teacher 2026 Worth It?

For a Karnataka B.Ed graduate with the right subject and, where needed, a TET pass, this is a strong opportunity: over a thousand permanent teaching posts in residential schools, a healthy ₹54,175 starting scale, and a merit list decided by one exam rather than an interview. The two things to fix before you apply are your cadre (RPC unless you hold a 371-J certificate) and whether your subject needs TET. The window closes on 13 August.
