PNB Local Bank Officer 2026: 545 Officer Posts, 1 Year Bank Experience Needed, Apply by 9 August
On this page
Punjab National Bank has opened 545 officer posts in Scale-I across 17 states and union territories, and the headline number will pull in thousands of fresh graduates who are not actually eligible. PNB Local Bank Officer 2026 requires one year of prior banking experience, so this is a post for people already working in a bank, not for freshers. If you do have that experience, it is a strong opportunity, and applications close on 9 August 2026.

The Experience Rule That Rules Out Freshers
Start here, because it saves the wrong candidates a ₹1,180 fee. The notification requires a minimum of one year of post-qualification work experience in the clerical or officer cadre of any scheduled commercial bank or regional rural bank listed in the Second Schedule of the RBI Act, 1934. The year is counted after your graduation and is reckoned as on 9 August 2026, and you must produce an employer-certified proof in the prescribed format. Experience in other financial institutions does not count unless the job profile substantially matches a PNB Scale-I generalist officer role.
There is an upside for those who qualify: one advance increment for each completed year worked as an officer in a scheduled commercial bank, up to a maximum of two increments, though service in a subsidiary earns only one. Prior service does not count towards seniority.
Language, Not Domicile: How the Local Condition Works
The word “Local” in the post name refers to language, not birthplace. There is no domicile requirement anywhere in the notification. What is required is proficiency in the specified language of the state you apply for, and the notification handles it in a way many candidates miss:
- If you studied that language as a subject in Class 10 or Class 12, you declare it in the application and are exempted from the language test entirely, subject to producing the certificate at verification.
- If you did not, you must appear for the Local Language Proficiency Test, conducted by an external agency, covering reading, writing and speaking.
- The test is qualifying only. It adds nothing to your merit score, but failing it makes you ineligible for final selection whatever your other marks.
You may apply for one state only, and the choice cannot be changed later. Two states on the list use English as the specified language: Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. One more commitment to note before choosing: a selected candidate stays posted within that state until completing 9 years of service or being promoted to Scale IV, whichever comes first.
All 17 States and Their Language
| State or UT | Posts | Language required |
|---|---|---|
| Assam | 85 | Assamese or Bodo |
| West Bengal | 80 | Bengali |
| Karnataka | 78 | Kannada |
| Gujarat | 77 | Gujarati |
| Maharashtra | 67 | Marathi |
| Tamil Nadu | 51 | Tamil |
| Telangana | 41 | Telugu |
| Tripura | 18 | Bengali or Kokborok |
| Jammu & Kashmir | 9 | Urdu, Dogri or Kashmiri |
| Meghalaya | 8 | Garo or Khasi |
| Manipur | 6 | Manipuri or Meitei |
| Mizoram | 5 | Mizo |
| Nagaland | 5 | English |
| Sikkim | 5 | Nepali or Sikkimese |
| Andhra Pradesh | 4 | Telugu |
| Arunachal Pradesh | 4 | English |
| Ladakh | 2 | Urdu, Purgi or Bhoti |
| Total | 545 |
Merit lists are drawn state-wise and category-wise, so your competition is limited to the state you pick. Reserved-category candidates in a state with no vacancy for their category may apply against unreserved seats if they meet the unreserved criteria. Vacancy numbers are provisional.
The Written Test, Then an Interview
Selection runs in four phases: the online written test, screening, the language test where applicable, and a personal interview. The written paper is 150 questions for 150 marks in 180 minutes, with separate timing per section:
- General, Economy and Banking Awareness: 50 questions, 50 marks, 50 minutes
- Reasoning and Computer Aptitude: 25 questions, 35 minutes
- Data Analysis and Interpretation: 25 questions, 35 minutes
- Quantitative Aptitude: 25 questions, 35 minutes
- English Language: 25 questions, 25 minutes
Negative marking is one fourth per wrong answer, and there are sectional minimums: 40% in each section for general and EWS candidates, 35% for reserved categories. The interview carries 50 marks, with a qualifying minimum of 45% for SC and ST candidates and 50% for everyone else. Final merit is the aggregate of the written test and interview, state-wise and category-wise, subject to clearing the language test. The notification does not print a written-to-interview weightage ratio, so treat any percentage split you see elsewhere as unofficial. The online test is tentatively scheduled for August or September 2026.
Pay, Probation and the Two Lakh Bond
The post is in JMGS-I on a scale of ₹48,480 to ₹85,920, with dearness allowance, house rent allowance or leased accommodation, medical insurance and retirement benefits on top. The notification does not print a gross or CTC figure, so we will not estimate one for you.
Two conditions to weigh seriously. Probation is two years from joining. And there is an indemnity bond: you must serve the bank for at least three years, failing which you pay ₹2,00,000. A CIBIL score of 680 or above is also required at the time of joining, though it is not a condition for applying, and candidates with no bank account are exempt from producing it.

Is PNB LBO Worth It for You
If you are already a bank clerk or officer with a year behind you, this is one of the better lateral moves available: a Scale-I officer post in a large public-sector bank, a merit list confined to your own state, and a language exemption if you studied that language at school. If you are a fresher, this recruitment is simply not open to you despite the 545 posts, and applying wastes the fee. The other things to price in are the two-year probation, the three-year commitment backed by a ₹2,00,000 bond, and the nine-year state lock-in. The form closes on 9 August 2026.
