Indian Navy SSC Officer 2026 Eligibility
The qualification and age are not the same for every branch, so you must check the exact rules for your chosen branch. Here is a general guide based on the official notification.
- Executive, Logistics, Naval Armament Inspectorate Cadre, Engineering, Electrical, Naval Constructor, and the two Submarine Technology branches: You should be born between 2 July 2002 and 1 January 2008. Most of these need a BE or B.Tech degree with at least 60 percent marks, though Logistics also accepts an MBA, or a B.Sc, B.Com or B.Sc in Information Technology followed by a postgraduate diploma, or an MCA or M.Sc in Information Technology, each with a first class.
- Pilot and Naval Air Operations Officer: You should be born between 2 July 2003 and 1 July 2008. You need a BE or B.Tech degree in any discipline with at least 60 percent marks. Naval Air Operations Officer candidates also need at least 60 percent in Class 10 and Class 12 combined, and at least 60 percent in English.
- Air Traffic Controller: You should be born between 2 July 2002 and 1 July 2006. The qualification is an engineering degree with the minimum marks required for this branch, so check the exact stream requirement in the official notification for this post.
- Education branch: You should be born between 2 July 2002 and 1 July 2006 for most subject groups, though the postgraduate engineering subject options have a wider band starting from 2 July 2000. Depending on your subject, you need a postgraduate degree such as an M.Sc or MA in Mathematics, Physics, Meteorology, Oceanography or a related science, an MA in History (minimum 55 percent, lower than the 60 percent needed for the other Education subject options), a BE or B.Tech in Mechanical or Production, a BE or B.Tech in Electrical, Electronics or Communication, or an ME or M.Tech in a related specialisation. All Education branch candidates also need at least 60 percent in Class 10 and Class 12 combined, and at least 60 percent in English.
Across all branches, you must be unmarried to apply, and your degree must be from a university recognised by the UGC or AICTE. Marks are checked using a normalisation formula on your results up to the 5th semester for BE or B.Tech candidates, or the pre final year for postgraduate candidates, not just your final percentage, so even candidates in their last year of study can apply if they meet the conditions. Keep in mind that marrying during training leads to discharge and a requirement to refund your pay and training costs, and the same refund rule applies if you resign during your two year probation after joining.
Candidates with an NCC C certificate of at least B grade, held for a minimum of 2 years in the Senior Division, get a 5 percent relaxation in the SSB shortlisting cut off. There are also special entries for Merchant Navy officers with a valid Certificate of Competency, and for holders of a Commercial Pilot Licence from the DGCA, with their own separate age bands.
SSB Selection Process for SSC Officers
There is no written exam for this particular course. Shortlisting is done directly on the normalised marks of your qualifying degree, not through a computer based test. After shortlisting, the process has these stages.
- SSB interview, Stage 1: An intelligence test along with a picture perception and discussion test. Only candidates who clear Stage 1 move to Stage 2.
- SSB interview, Stage 2: Psychological tests, group testing exercises, and a personal interview.
- Medical examination: A Special Medical Board over a few days, checking your general health, eyesight, and other standard tests such as blood tests, chest X-ray and ECG. If declared unfit, you can request an Appeal Medical Board within 42 days.
The final merit list is based on your SSB marks. Vision standards are not the same for every branch. Corrected vision must be 6 by 6 in both eyes for all branches, but Pilot and Naval Air Operations Officer entries do not allow any myopia at all, while branches like Logistics, Education, Naval Armament Inspectorate Cadre and Air Traffic Control allow myopia up to minus 3.5D. So those aiming for flying branches should get an eye check done early. Being on the merit list does not guarantee a job, since it also depends on medical fitness and the number of vacancies available.

Indian Navy SSC Officer Salary and Benefits
The notification states a starting gross salary of about ₹1,20,000 per month, which is an all inclusive figure. On the standard defence pay matrix, this rank falls under Pay Level 10, which runs from about ₹56,100 to ₹1,77,500 as basic pay, and every officer also gets Military Service Pay of ₹15,500 per month. Officers in flying or submarine roles get a specialisation allowance of ₹31,250 per month, but only after they finish the related specialisation training, not from the day they join.
On top of this, there are other allowances such as sea going allowance, technical allowance, hard area allowance, uniform allowance and house rent allowance, depending on your posting and role. There is also compulsory group insurance cover. Since this is a Short Service Commission, remember that you get a gratuity when you leave after your tenure, and not a lifelong pension like officers who hold a Permanent Commission.
Common Mistakes About This Recruitment
- Calling this a permanent or pensionable job. It is a Short Service Commission of 12 years, extendable by up to 2 years, ending in a gratuity, not a pension.
- Mixing this up with Agniveer. Agniveer is a separate sailor entry scheme with its own age limit and terms, and is not the same as this officer entry.
- Quoting the tenure as 10 years extendable to 14. The correct figure in this notification is 12 years extendable by up to 2 years.
- Giving one age limit for all branches. As shown above, there are several different age bands depending on the branch.
- Assuming a written exam is compulsory. For this course, there is no written test, only shortlisting by marks followed by the SSB interview.
Should You Apply?
Indian Navy SSC Officer 2026 is worth applying to if you are a graduate with the required marks and you want a career as a commissioned officer, since it covers a wide range of branches from general service roles to flying and technical branches, with a starting gross pay of about ₹1,20,000 a month. Since there is no written exam, your existing degree marks and your performance in the SSB interview will decide your selection, so if you are eligible, focus on preparing well for the SSB rather than worrying about a separate entrance test. Apply before 27 July 2026, since there is no fixed extension mentioned in the notification.
